Huge Silhouette Black Friday Sale & 6 Awesome Silhouette Cutting Machine Projects

Incredible Silhouette Black Friday Sale

disclosure-REVIEW

I have always wanted a die cutting machine.

Before Grace was born, when I was really into scrapbooking with paper, I had to actually go to the scrapbook store (do scrapbook stores still exist?) and buy cardstock and use their giant die cutting machine. I’d choose a design and put the paper onto the large design plate, put the plate into a metal pan, slide the pan under the rollers, turn a handle, and as it passed under the rollers, the plate’s blades would expose and cut the cardstock into whatever shape I had chosen.

One year, I made calendars for all my grandmothers and aunts, and I stood at that die cutting machine for days of my life, cutting letters to make month names.

This was before letter stickers were plentiful, too. If you wanted letters, you had to cut them with scissors or a craft knife or you had to use a die cutting machine.

Shortly after Grace was born (or maybe the year I was pregnant with her), my mom gave me a Sizzix machine for Christmas. It’s a mini die cutter for home use. You still have to buy plates, but they’re small and inexpensive. Die cutting at home! I was in heaven.

Then along came computerized die cutting machines. They had real power – no more cartridges! Designs could be loaded into the machine, and the machine did the cutting, and you were finished.

I was amazed, and I always hoped that my mom would get me one for Christmas, but she never did.

Then, last month, Silhouette, maker of the very coolest computerized die cut machine, asked me if I’d like to review one and promote it during their Black Friday Sale.

I waited approximately one second before emailing back “YES! YES! YES! YES! I’d love to!”

So let me begin with the sale because it is amazing, and I think my mom would have finally gotten me a Silhouette if she had been around for this.

I have done a lot of crafting since the Silhouette CAMEO arrived at my house. Probably more (grown-up) crafting than I did the whole year before.

I had intended to include a tutorial here. I was going to make a project with the CAMEO and show you how to do it, step by step.

I can’t.

The problem is that the machine makes everything so easy. You line it up in the software, press a button, change the blade setting, and click CUT.

And then it cuts, and you’re done.

It’s even easier than paint the acorns and sprinkle them with glitter.

So instead of explaining how to do it, I’m just going to show you all the things I’ve made in the two weeks I’ve had the CAMEO. (Grace says I play with it too much. I feel like a little kid on Christmas, playing with a new toy.)

Paper Dolls

Our very first project was a set of paper dolls. We downloaded a doll pattern (Lizzy by Rivka Williams) and a slew of clothes and costumes (including pilgrim and Indian dresses).

The Silhouette software connects to the printer as well as the cutting machine, so it printed the paper dolls first. Then I took the cardstock out of the printer and put it into the cutting machine. It cut perfectly around every part of the image – even the tips of the fingers!

Biggest Silhouette Sale Ever!

I choose all the pieces I wanted in brown, arranged them on one page in my Silhouette software, and cut the pieces out of brown cardstock.

I did the same thing with the white pieces, the black ones, gold, and other colors.

I’m going to put the paper dolls on either magnet paper or chipboard, but I haven’t decided which to use. The Silhouette can cut both, so it will be really easy to cut and attach either one.

There is a learning curve to the Silhouette cutting machine. When I switched from cardstock to patterned paper (which is much thinner and more delicate), I had some tears at the corners. I made some adjustments to the settings on my machine, and these disappeared.

Grace and I were excited to cut our doll clothes in exactly the right places on this butterfly paper. We cut a template first so that we would know exactly where to place the clothes in the software so that they would cut properly.

Toy Bin Labels

We have this large Ikea thing in our living room, and it’s always been full of toys. I really, really love it.

The only problem we have is that we have to pull out three or four drawers in order to find the one with the Squinkies in it or the one with the puzzle pieces or the special toys. I bought a roll of black adhesive vinyl and designed labels for all of our toy bins in my Silhouette software.

You can use any font on your computer; I chose Cheri, a free font, to make these labels.

Vinyl Wall Art

This is my pièce de résistance. From the beginning, I wanted to cut a quote or saying to put on the wall behind my chair in the living room. For a few years, a 36″x48″ picture frame hung there. It contained a collage of pictures of Grace as an infant.

It fell and broke last year, and the space has forever been empty.

I looked through some quotes online and in the Silhouette online store, and I happened upon this one. It is absolutely perfect for us.

I’m the mom who shows up at church with no diapers in the diaper bag. I’m the mom whose kids arrive at playdates with dirty faces and unbrushed hair.

I never feel like I have it all together.

Never.

Joe feels the same way.

(Do you? I’m pretty sure that we all feel like we’re a mess, but I’m not sure.)

Anyway, getting this from my imagination to the wall was a little more complicated than I imagined, but even it was doable. I cut the letters (had a mishap with the alignment of the vinyl in the machine – another learning curve), used scotch tape to attach them to the wall, arranged them, re-arranged them (more than once), then removed the scotch tape and the paper backing, sticking the letters to the wall.

Yesterday, my mother-in-law asked me if I’d painted my wall. It looks that good.

I’m so pleased with this that I’m giddy. It makes me smile every time I see it.

3D Bows to decorate or attach to packages

This was so easy that I can’t call it a project. I cut the files on patterned paper, laid all the pieces pattern side down on the table, and glued the ends into the middle. I tried scrapbook adhesive first, but it didn’t work. I ended up using the glue gun. I’ll be making lots more of these!

Christmas Gift Organizer

This has already been super helpful. The file I downloaded from the Silhouette store included cards to print and cut (a really cool feature of the Silhouette machine), plus the cutting files for the blue organizer part.

Advent Treat Box

This took forever to put together, but it’s really cute. I made two of these, one for each of the girls, and put a little chocolate treat in each compartment. They can enjoy their treats after dinner each night.

I’ll probably put up a tutorial for this project in the next week or two because it definitely wasn’t easy. It took me at least 3 hours.

What would you like to see detailed tutorials for?

Okay, so what would you like to see me make next?

On my list are a 3D poinsettia, snowflake ornaments for the Christmas tree, a 3D Christmas tree with ornaments, a Nativity shadow box, a 3D star ornament, some mini albums (for Christmas gifts), puzzles (so excited about the puzzles!), dominoes, more paper doll clothes, and some cards.

You know, just a couple of things.

I went to the craft store yesterday to buy a lot of cardstock. Fortunately, I had a 30% off coupon.

So tell me, what would you make if you had a Silhouette CAMEO or Portrait?

PS. Don’t forget to use the code FEELSLIKEHOME in order to get the great prices above!

I received a free Silhouette CAMEO cutting machine as well as some free consumable products in order to facilitate this review. Please see my disclosure policy for more information.
