My girls and I are on the run a lot. From moms’ groups to art class to church activities, we are in and out of the car almost every day.
Because a lot of our activities end just before lunch time, I need quick lunch options. One of the girls’ favorites is Ellio’s Pizza.
I want to pause to say that I have purchased Ellio’s Pizza at Walmart for quite a while before this review opportunity came up. I am being compensated to review the product, but I agreed to do so because I was already a fan.
We buy Ellio’s Pizza at our local WalMart, and it’s pretty inexpensive – around $3 for 9 pizzas.
For a quick lunch, I microwave (I know, I know! You aren’t supposed to microwave them, but we don’t have a toaster oven. I’m not heating up the oven for one little slice of pizza.) a pizza and cut it in half for the girls.
Remember the FDA guidelines – half of the plate should be fruits or vegetables. I split the pizza between Grace and Allie, and I always add some cut up carrots or cucumbers and fruit to go with it. Add a glass of milk or water, and lunch is on the table in under 3 minutes.
The timing is important when you’re dealing with hungry kids. If we’ve stayed out too long, you know both of them are crying and whining until the food is sitting in front of them.
I usually make myself a whole pizza and add fruit and some veggies, too. (The half your plate thing applies to adults as well as to kids.)
As far as frozen pizza goes, Ellio’s is good. The crust is thin but not wafer-like. (Mine is always soft because I put it in the microwave, but I imagine it crisps up nicely in an oven or toaster oven.) It has a decent amount of cheese, but I always add extra. We always buy the pepperoni variety (because Grace is obsessed with pepperoni), and it has 6 slices of pepperoni per pizza.
The best part of Ellio’s pizza is their sauce. It’s made from vine-ripened tomatoes and includes a variety of Italian spices. It’s not a typical bland pizza sauce; it has a lot of flavor without being overpowering.
