Back in May, I was planning to continue our normal routine, including homeschooling, through the summer. Allie takes a nap every day after lunch, so I thought we’d sit down to homeschool and play right after I put her down to sleep.

If the last three weeks are any indication, my plan is a miserable failure.

Poor Allie has had a proper nap maybe once a week. We’ve done school once a week.

The problem?

We’re never at home. Our local library has all sorts of activities – story times, movies, crafts, and more. Grace was in a Nature Explorers day camp and has another coming up. We’ve had doctor’s appointments. We’ve gone shopping and hiking and swimming. We have vacation Bible school coming up.

There isn’t one thing that’s getting in the way of my summer plans, but something is always getting in the way.

At first, I was stressed out about missing school every day. Then I gave up. I decided that I’m going to enjoy the summer – whatever it holds – and that some school is better than no school.

Part of accepting that our summer is going to be full and energetic was packing a summer bag so that we’d be prepared for our day no matter what was happening.

In our bag, we have water bottles for each of us, sunscreen, and Lipton Tea & Honey packets.

I’ve been meaning to add some bug spray, but haven’t remembered it while I was at the store.

The nice thing about having our bag all packed and ready to go (aside from the ice water which I refill each morning) is that we’re always ready for a hike, for playing in the lake, for a trip to the playground, or for anywhere the wind leads us.

Lipton Tea & Honey

Lipton’s Tea & Honey drink mixes taste good, and they’re guilt-free with only 5 calories per 8 ounces. (I only use 1/2 the powder suggested by the packet, so mine is actually 2.5 calories per 8 ounces.) They’re sweetened with real honey and made from real tea leaves and fruit flavors.

Lipton makes 6 different flavors including Lemon, Peach Apricot, and Mango Pineapple (that’s what’s in the photo above). The Lemon was my favorite of the samples I received, but I’m going to look for the Peach Apricot at the grocery store. Peach tea is my favorite.

Unfortunately, my summer bag just has my work laptop in it! I will be working overtime most of the summer, but it would be great to TASTE summer while I am working through it.

My summer bag has my iPhone, diabetes supplies for my daughter, and my library card!

We’ve been spending every day out back. I pack up all that we’ll need while we’re out there: My water cup, my daughter’s water cup, the dog, a book for me, my laptop and my phone. My daughter’s toys are already out there!

I know I’m comment #4, but…
My summer bag has a picnic “mat” in it, sunscreen, an Off fan, and sunglasses.
We pack snacks & drinks later.

A picnic blanket is a great idea! I should put one in our bag.

our bag has extra change of clothes for the pt’ing toddler, 100+proof SPF sunscreen since we are all very fair skinned, neat sheet. I have a few extra swimsuits and try to keep towels in the van so we can go to a friends pool or to the lake.
