Apple Fritters from the Gold Medal Flour Cook Book

Joe, Grace, and I visited my Grandma this past weekend. Some of the best times in my life have taken place at her house.

While we were at my Grandma’s house, she brought out this old cookbook.

Gold Medal Flour Cook Book

As you might imagine, I said, “My Dear Readers will love that!” and quickly brought out my camera to began photographing it.

The first thing my Grandma pointed out to me was that the owner, Kate Rodgers, signed her name on the top of the book, along with the date on which she received it. Kate Rodgers was my grandmother’s mother’s cousin. The Rodgers were early settlers of Tennessee, and many of them still live there.

Though Kate Rodgers wrote October 24, 1912 on top of the  Gold Medal Flour Cook Book, its copyright date is 1910.Gold Medal Flour Cook Book Copyright

The illustrations and recipes in the book are amazing. I’m saving most of them for another post.

Let me shift gears to say that Joe, Grace and I stopped at Baby’s 1950′s-style diner in State College on the way home from Grandma’s house.

After lunch, we got dessert. Joe ordered apple fritter a la mode, and I ordered a hot fudge cookie sundae. They were both delicious, of course.

When I arrived home, I noticed that the apple fritter recipe in the Gold Medal Flour Cook Book was very similar to the dessert Joe ate at Baby’s.

I simplified and typed the recipe below, too.

Ingredients
  • Soft, tart apples
  • Brandy
  • Lemon juice
  • Sugar
  • Gold Medal Flour
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • Powdered sugar
  • Cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Peel, core and slice the apples.
  2. Soak apple rings in a mixture of brandy, lemon juice, and sugar until they have acquired the taste.
  3. Drain and dust the apples with flour.
  4. Heat 3 tablespoons of butter in a skillet. When it is very hot, fry the apple on both sides.
  5. Sprinkle cooked apple with powdered sugar and cinnamon.
  6. Serve very hot (with ice cream?)

Does that sound delicious or what?

WOW! That is so cool. I love old books, and old cookbooks. What a neat heirloom. :) MY Nannie was born in 1911, and she’s given me some of her older books that I treasure. The recipe sounds delish. :) Visiting from Jen’s party. :)
