It sounds like you're not getting the tulle pinched tightly enough to start with. It has to be stacked together for the knot to pull down nicely. If you take 3 pieces of 6" wide tulle and fold it in half, the loop I get does not look that together and when pulled into the 'knot' it's big and puffy. I can’t.
