Last week, I mentioned how Grace and Joe made homemade ice cream together.

We made ice cream!

I had no idea what a fervor homemade ice cream would cause among my Dear Readers. I received several emails asking for the recipe for the homemade ice cream, so I thought I’d share it with the whole class.

Homemade Ice Cream, the old fashioned way
Print
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
Instructions
  1. Pour these ingredients into a quart-sized zippered bag. This bag should seal tightly. Try to squeeze out all of the air as you seal the bag.
  2. Put the quart-sized bag into a gallon-sized zippered bag, and fill the bigger bag up most of the way with crushed ice. Add 3 or 4 tablespoons of salt to the bag, squeeze out the air, and seal it up.
  3. Smoosh the bags around for five to ten minutes. Shake them, squish them, and squeeze them around. Have fun, but be careful not to break the bags open.
  4. After five to ten minutes, the ice cream should be sufficiently frozen to eat. We’ve added crushed up Oreo cookies, chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, and mashed bananas (all at different times – not together!) and have gotten good results.

Enjoy!

Don’t forget to stop back on Thursday for Grace’s Kitchen!

How fun! My daughter used to do something similar to this in Girl Scouts when she was (lots) younger. Thanks for bringing back a great memory.

A special ed teacher I know makes ice cream using plastic coffee containers, a small inside a large. She places some very clean marbles inside the smaller container with the ice cream ingredients to speed up the process. After taping both lids securely, she takes the kids and container outside and has them play soccer with the container! They love the making as much as the eating!

I made this once before and have forgotten all about it. I’m sending it off right now to all my college students! They are always looking for fun activities and it will be perfect!

My paternal grandfather’s family was poor….lived off of radishes and potatoes from their backyard poor….but my great-grandfather loved to make homemade ice cream. He died when my mom was still very young, but I’ve heard countless stories of him sitting along the side of the road selling homemade ice cream to a long line of farmers and their families. I think it’s a wonderful Pennsylvania tradition, and I love that you’re sharing it with Grace!
