Why this is the best Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting recipe
It's a simple recipe. This easy banana cake with cream cheese frosting uses basic ingredients like ripe bananas, flour, sugar, eggs, butter, and cream cheese, so everything is easy to find at your local grocery store.
It's very easy. All you have to do is mash the bananas, mix the cake batter, spread it into a baking dish, and bake until soft and golden. Once it cools, add the cream cheese frosting and slice it into squares.
It tastes amazing! The sweet banana cake is soft, moist, and full of homemade flavor, while the tangy cream cheese frosting makes every bite rich, creamy, and extra delicious.

What you'll need to make Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
Equipment
Ingredients

See the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page for all measurements and nutritional information.
- Yellow cake mix - This is a super easy recipe because it starts with a cake mix. No measuring because the salt, baking soda, all-purpose flour, and everything else is already pre-mixed.
- Eggs - Large eggs are best. If you remember to leave them out on the counter, they will mix in better if they are room temperature.
- Mashed banana - This is the star of the show. Overripe bananas are best, so go for browning or heavily spotted ones. If using frozen bananas, be sure to thaw them first. Room temp is best.
- Sour cream - You can substitute Greek yogurt if you have it.
- Canola oil - Any flavorless oil is fine. I don't recommend olive oil.
- Cream cheese - This should be very soft.
- Butter - This should also be very soft. Unsalted butter is best in baked goods, but you can use salted too.
- Powdered sugar - This is required to make the cream cheese frosting. You can't make frosting without powdered sugar.
- Walnut pieces - Should be finely chopped, optional.
How to make banana cake with cream cheese frosting
- Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease a 9x13-inch pan on the bottom and sides by rubbing them with a cold stick of butter.
- Beat cake mix and wet ingredients (eggs, bananas, sour cream, and oil) in a large bowl with a mixer on low until moistened, scraping the bottom of the bowl often. Beat in the mixing bowl on medium for 2 minutes.

- Pour cake batter into the prepared pan.

Bake time is 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool cake completely in the pan on a wire rack. - Beat cream cheese and butter with mixer on medium until blended.

Gradually add sugar, beating well after each addition.
- Frost the cake. Sprinkle chopped walnuts over the top.
- Refrigerate leftovers.

Substitutions & variations
I am a huge fan of cream cheese frosting, but of course, you can use vanilla frosting or chocolate or whatever flavor you want. Or just dust the top with powdered sugar and leave it unfrosted.
You can change the nuts or leave them out. Chopped walnuts or pecans taste great on banana cake, but you can skip them completely if you want a smoother texture or need a nut-free dessert.
Top each serving with a couple of slices of less ripe banana for that fresh banana flavor.
You can add extra flavor. Try mixing in cinnamon, mini chocolate chips, or shredded coconut into the cake batter, or use a little caramel drizzle on top of the cream cheese frosting for a fun twist.
You can make it even easier to serve. Bake the banana cake in a 9x13 pan for simple squares, or make it into a layer cake or even cupcakes if you want a dessert that is easy to grab for parties, potlucks, or lunchboxes. You can make it in two loaf pans or a bundt cake pan. Layers, cupcakes, and loaf pans will cook much more quickly so pay attention to the oven.
Storing leftovers
Store leftover banana cake with cream cheese frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Remove from the fridge and let the cake come to room temperature for a few minutes before serving so the frosting softens and the cake tastes moist and fresh. You can also freeze unfrosted banana cake for longer storage (wrapped tightly in plastic wrap, then aluminum foil), then thaw overnight and frost before serving.
