All I know about the beach

I got busy last week and couldn’t tell you my beach vacation stories. I’m sorry to have neglected you then, but I’m back now. Where did I leave off?

The first day, we went to the downtown Rehoboth Beach. It was packed with people, and the waves were big, and I skinned my knees and elbows. The

second day, we went to Indian River Inlet, a state park south of the city that my husband remembered from the days of his youth. It was as crowded, too, and the waves were big, and my swimsuit got all filled up with sand. The third day, we lounged around the swimming pool at our condo. The fourth day, we discovered an itty bitty beach with a sweet fishing spot. We liked it so much that we stayed for too many hours and even went back another day.
On the way home, as my skin sizzled and the blisters swelled, I realized that my vacation was starting to sound like something out of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Beach or maybe National Lampoon’s Beach Vacation.

I’m not a newbie any more, and I’ve learned a thing or two (or eight). Here’s what I know about beach vacations -
  1. Don’t play where the waves crash.
  2. Don’t sit in the sand without a blanket or towel.
  3. Don’t forget to reapply your sunscreen frequently throughout the day.
  4. You can only build a sand castle with slightly wet sand. Too dry or too wet, and it won’t work out.
  5. When beach combing, assume that the closed shells are still alive. If you put them in your jar, they will die and then they will smell. Terrible. Forever. And so will the car.
  6. Don’t take a busy toddler when you go to eat Hot Fat Crabs. It takes too long, and everyone gets frustrated.
  7. Don’t put your magazine under your cloth chair and then sit down, wet, in the chair. The magazine will get wet.
  8. Pack your suitcase, and then remove half of the contents. You’ll never use them anyway.
Seriously, Dear Reader, this was the best vacation of my whole life.  There were so many new experiences for me and for Gracie, and it was wonderful for Joe to relive the vacations of his youth. I can’t wait for next summer so that we can go back again!
